Women's Champions League entries confirmed

Holders Barcelona lead 72 clubs from 50 different associations hoping to win the new-look competition.

Barcelona are among four clubs entering in the group stage with 68 others competing for 12 berths

A record 72 teams from 50 different associations will take part in the new-look 2021/22 UEFA Women's Champions League.

In all, 59 clubs will be involved in the round 1 draw streamed live at 13:00 CET on Friday, with nine more starting in round 2 and four entering directly in the new 16-team group stage. The 12 debutants include the likes of Real Madrid, AC Milan, Hoffenheim, Bordeaux and Celtic.

Who enters when?

• The access list was determined by the UEFA women's association club coefficients at the end of the 2019/20 season.

• The holders and the champions of the three highest-ranked associations (France, Germany and Spain) enter in the group stage. As Barcelona are both title holders and champions of Spain, the champions of the fourth-ranked association (England) also enter in the group stage, meaning Chelsea join Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern München.

• The champions of the remaining associations will go into the champions path. The champions of associations ranked 5 to 7 (Sweden, Czech Republic and Denmark) will enter in round 2, with the rest (ranked 8 to 50) entering in round 1.

• The runners-up of the six highest-ranked associations (France, Germany, Spain, England, Sweden, Czech Republic) will enter in round 2 of the league path.

• The third-placed teams of those six associations, and the runners-up of the next ten highest-ranked associations (Denmark, Netherlands, Italy, Kazakhstan, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Scotland, Russia, Belarus) will enter in round 1 of the league path.

Women's Champions League round 1 draw

The first draw for the new-look competition is streamed live at 13:00 CET on Friday.

The UEFA Women's Champions League has a new look for 2021/22 and the first draw will be streamed live at 13:00 CET on Friday 2 July.

Round 1 is one of two rounds before the new 16-team group stage, which begins in October. It will be split into two paths: the champions path and the league path. In both paths, round 1 will consist of two stages, each of one-off matches: semi-finals (18 August) and finals/third-place play-offs (21 August). The winners of each final (11 in champions path, four in league path) will progress to round 2.

Champions path

- Forty-three teams will enter at this stage: the champions of the associations ranked eighth and below.

- They will be drawn into 11 mini-tournaments: ten with four teams and one with three teams.

- The winners of the 11 finals will progress to round 2, into which three teams have direct entry. Seven group stage places will be on offer in round 2.

League path

- Sixteen teams will enter at this stage: the runners-up from the associations ranked seventh to 16th and the third-placed teams from the associations ranked first to sixth.

- They will be drawn into four mini-tournaments of four teams each.

- The winners of the four finals will progress to round 2, into which six teams have direct entry. Five group stage places will be on offer in round 2.

Draw procedure

- Clubs are seeded for round 1 in accordance with the club coefficient rankings established at the beginning of the season.

- In the champions path, the 43 teams are divided into one pot of 22 teams and one pot of 21 teams.

- Teams are drawn into two semi-final ties within each four-team group, with the teams in Pot 1 designated as the home teams of semi-finals 1 and 2 respectively.

- For the group with three teams, the team with the highest coefficient is seeded directly to the final and designated as the home team of that tie; the remaining two teams play a single-leg tie, with the team from Pot 1 designated as the home team.

- In the league path, the 16 teams are divided into two pots of eight teams.

- Teams are drawn into two semi-final ties within each four-team group, with the teams in pot 1 designated as the home teams of semi-finals 1 and 2 respectively.

- For the final and third-place matches in each path, the team with the highest coefficient in the tie concerned is designated as the home team.

- Based on the UEFA Executive Committee decisions valid at the time of the draw, teams from the following associations cannot be drawn into the same group: Kosovo / Bosnia and Herzegovina; Kosovo / Serbia; Kosovo / Russia; Ukraine / Russia.
