Europe League: Benfica - Newcastle

Yeah it's strange. I have always respected Benfica, but as we have never played each other before and Newcastle hasn't been in Europe as much these past 10 years compared to 1995-2004, and also the Portuguese league isn't followed as much over here as other leagues like Spain, Italy etc then you don't notice Benfica as much as we should.
It's not until we are scheduled to play that you do all your research and realise just how big and prestigious your club actually is. That pre-match eagle show is fantastic, as is your stadium, and it's good to see your club on the rise again after a disappointing (by your standards) period (Souness  >:(). I'm quite looking forward to watching my first Portuguese league match tomorrow night.

You guys, back in England, should follow the Portuguese League as well. It's not so interesting as the others because, basically, there are only two teams that go for the championship, but it's good to watch.

So you must imagine that watching the Premier is a breath of fresh air around here  ;D

Benficas' bitch it's playing at this moment against Setubal. Great LOL moments :)

Paullow, 1995-2004 were exactly the worst years in Benfica's history. We were Champions in 1994 and then only 11 years after, in 2005. That may explain why we never faced you guys. We even ended failing european qualification spots (in Portugal that's ridiculous, since there are only 3 or 4 clubs playing for it).

This was during the golden years of portuguese corruption (with Pinto da Costa, still currents Porto's chairman, leading it). See this for example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4836rGsx24

Baía manages to play with his hands outside the box, ref lets the play continue, we score, and that dirty cunt disallows it because of an... offside! What the fuck? :)

Even when we were champions 11 years after, in 2004/05, we had to face that shitty refs. Here you can see Petit "scoring" against Porto, in 2004/05... unfortunately the ref, once again, was unable to see it. Baía took the ball past the goal line and the play continued.

After so many corrupted titles, and intimidating refs, players, etc... Porto lost 6 points in a year that they were still crowded champions. Only Boavista got a serious penalty (they were relegated). Well, that portuguese football. That's why we consider Sporting our rival (you played them in 2004/05 btw) and Porto our enemies. Portuguese football in a nutshell.

At european level, we are recovering our status. You can see this clearly by how our position in the UEFA ranking, used to seed the teams, has changed over the years (20 years ago it was awesome, then it declined suddenly and now we are rising again).

UEFA Team Ranking 1990 - 4
UEFA Team Ranking 1995 - 10
UEFA Team Ranking 2000 - 54
UEFA Team Ranking 2005 - 57
UEFA Team Ranking 2010 - 17
UEFA Team Ranking at the moment - 12

If we beat you guys, we'll probably rise to the 10th spot and be pot 1 in the next Champions League, joining the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern, etc, where we belong. Most of them have more Champions titles than we got (2), but we lost 5 finals, so that can be misleading...

Looking at the amount of talent you got this days, you can easily play for the european spots on a regular basis from now on too.

Let me just add that if any Newcastle fan is interested in knowing a little bit about the portuguese football mafia and the infamous FC Porto chairman Pinto da Costa, this is a short version of a documentary, less than 10 minutes, with english subtitles.

Btw, the documentary is unbiased, it's portuguese national television.

Greetings Newcastle supporters!

It's an honor to be drawn against such a great and historical club like yours.
I know you just had some rough years in your recent history, but I'm sure that in no time we will start seeing Newcastle in Europe every year.

These two matches will be epic and a great spectacle, I'm sure.

Cheers.

Dear Newcastle fans, i heard there are only 2 good things from Newcastle, Dire Straits and Cheryl Cole (as a sex symbol, not as a singer), your thoughts?

Trolling aside, hope we'll see 2 good football matches, i'd wish you good luck but i want us to win so fuck that, i'll just wish you have a good time, both there in England and in Portugal for those making the trip.

Oh and i read your forum and learned a lot, especially that i can masturbate to anyone's tits, no matter who they're from, just the concept of tits, it's brilliant, "Mike" changed my life, please send him my thank you.

All you guys who are signed up on the Newcastle forum should PM the user Mike this picture of a sheep:

and have nothing else but the picture in the PM. It would be rather great.
