Darren Wassall's side saw their three-game unbeaten run come to an end at St George's Park on Friday evening as goals from Joao Carvalho and Heriberto Tavares saw the Eagles secure a 2-0 win in the Premier League International Cup clash.

Benfica are the second European opposition that Derby's Under 23s have faced in the competition this season, having beaten PSV Eindhoven 2-1 last month.

Hanson, the 20-year-old midfielder, says those challenges alone have proven to be a significant learning curve and are different to what he and the players come up against every other week.

The International Cup, however, is just one of three cup competitions that Wassall's side are competing in this season, having already also played two games in the Checktrade Trophy this campaign, whilst his squad will also get their Premier League Cup challenge underway early next month.

Hanson believes the cup competitions the Rams' Under 23s are competing in this season are proving to be an important part of the players' developments moving forward.

He told Rams Player HD: "They were the best team that we have played against this season. It's a good learning curve for everyone to play against top European players of that standard, it's always good to test yourself against international players like that.

"I thought we went toe-to-toe with them and we gave it a good go. Technically they gave us a good test but I thought when we did get in possession we used the ball well and if we had taken our chances, who knows.

"We were dangerous from set-plays and we really put them under pressure early on from those situations. We kept putting the ball into the box because we thought we could get chances.

"The International Cup is a great test and something different. The English game is quite physical so these games are more technical and that's something that we have to adapt to as players.

"A big learning curve is exactly what it is and it's an important part of our development. It's good to be involved in different cups and coming up against different challenges, such as the Checkatrade Trophy which is playing against first-teams from League One and League Two."
