Não me estava a referir a parentescos reais, obviamente.

World Club Rankings - Top 25 Clubs - 1982

(Note: Since there was only minimal club action this weekend involving the WCR Top 25 Clubs, I am posting the next in my series of Annual Rankings. I hope you enjoy it – or at least find it interesting. The WCR Top 25 Clubs list will return next week.)

In the past, I've started off writing about each year by discussing events in the UEFA Champions Cup tournament. For 1982, I'm going to start off by talking about South American action. The reason for this is that 1982 saw a South American club sit atop the annual World Club Rankings for the first time. The 1982 Copa Libertadores final saw perennial powerhouse Penarol from Uruguay take on relative unknown Cobreloa in what appeared to be a mismatch on paper. After a scoreless draw in Centenario, however, it appeared that the Chilean club might actually pull off the major upset when it hosted the second leg. The upset bid did not end until an 89th minute goal by Penarol finally gave the Uruguayan club the lead and its fourth Copa Libertadores title – though it's first in sixteen years.

One of the reasons that a South American club climbed to the top of the rankings was that the 1980s were the glory years (so far) of South American club football, with great success in the Intercontinental Cup. Another reason was that in 1982, the most successful clubs in the European Champions Cup were not nearly as successful back home. The finals of the Champions Cup took place at Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where eleventh-placed in England Aston Villa took on the third-placed team in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich. Peter Withe scored the only goal of the match to give Aston Villa the title and England its sixth title in as many years. The 1982 Cup Winners Cup turned out to be one of those unfortunate (depending on whose side you're on) times when a club was able to host the title match. Barcelona took on Standard Liege in front of a home crowd at Camp Nou. After giving up an early goal, Barcelona was able to come back to win the title 2-1 on goals by former Footballer of the Year Allan Simonsen and Quini. The UEFA Cup resulted in a rare cup heading to Sweden as IFK Goteborg was able to defeat Hamburger SV not once, but twice on route to a 4-0 aggregate victory.

Of course, championships were being won in other parts of the world, as well, in 1982. In the Copa de Campeones y Subcampeones, Mexico's Pumas UNAM won its second title in three years by defeating Robin Hood of Suriname 3-2 over two matches. The African hardware all went to Egypt as Al-Ahly won its first African Champions Cup over Asante Kotoko of Ghana and Al Mokaoulun defeated Zambia's Power Dynamos to take home the African Cup Winners Cup. Elsewhere in the world, the top domestic leagues saw champions such as Liverpool, Hamburger, Real Sociedad, Penarol and Ferro Carril Oeste. The top clubs in all the world in 1982 can be found below:

World Club Rankings - Top 25 Clubs - 1983

(Note: Due to minimal action among club participants over the past week, the weekly WCR Top 25 will be passed over for the next installment in the WCR Annual Rankings. The weekly club ranking will return next week.)

As was demonstrated in 1982, when Uruguay's Penarol became the first South American club to finish atop the annual rankings, the 1980s were the glory years for South American clubs in the annual rankings.1983, however, did see the return of a European club to the pinnacle as Hamburger SV defeated Juventus 1-0 in Athens on an 8th minute goal by Feilix Magath to with the European Cup and make a trip to the top of the 1983 WCR Top 25. European glory was pretty evenly divided in 1982 as the finalists of the three major cup competitions came from six different countries and, contrary to form in the late 70s/early 80s, England was not one of those six nations. Scottish club Aberdeen defeated Real Madrid 2-1 in the Cup Winners Cup final on an extra time goal by John Hewitt. In its home-and-away format, RSC Anderlecht defeated Benfica 2-1 in the aggregate to take home the 1983 UEFA Cup.

For the second time in three years, the Copa Libertadores returned to Brazil, where Gremio defeated Uruguay's Penarol 3-2 in aggregate, before defeating European champion Hamburger SV 2-1 in the Intercontinental Cup final, with both IC goals coming from Renato Gaucho. Gremio's Intercontinental Cup victory marked the sixth in a row for South America.

Elsewhere around the world, Mexico's Atlante earned one of the highest ever ranking for a current CONCACAF club after defeating Suriname's Robin Hood in the finals of the Copa de Campeones y Subcampeones. In Africa, Asante Kotoko from Ghana defeated Egyptian club Al-Ahly 1-0 in aggregate to take the African Champions Cup away from the defending champions, but Egypt's Al-Mokaoulun did repeat as African Cup Winners Cup, defeating Agaza Lome 1-0 in aggregate.

In addition to winning the European Cup, Hamburger SV also finished atop its domestic table in the Bundesliga. Other champions in major domestic leagues included Liverpool, Nacional, Flamengo and Athletic de Bilbao, all of which finished in the top six of the annual rankings. To see where others finished, see below:

World Club Rankings - Top 25 Clubs in the World - 1984

(Note: Due to the minimal amount of club action this week, the weekly WCR Top 25 is taking the week off. It will return next week.)

We return to the annual rankings with a trip to the world of George Orwell's future. 1984 saw the WCR Team of the Year award return to England. Liverpool once again took the European Cup championship. In the final, both Liverpool and Roma managed first-half goals, but nothing else through the second half and extra time. Liverpool came from behind to score a 4-2 victory on penalty kicks to take home the European title, helping them to the top of the WCR year-end rankings.

Liverpool was not the only English club to take home European hardware thanks to penalty kicks. After home and away matches with RSC Anderlecht, Tottenham Hotspur took home the UEFA Cup after defeating its Belgian competition 4-3 on penalty kicks. Juventus, on the other hand, didn't need penalty kicks because its two first-half goals was enough to beat Porto 2-1 in the finals of the Cup Winners Cup.

The 1980s perhaps were the glory days of South American clubs. Despite disappointing domestic results in Argentina, Independiente took home its record seventh (and final, to date) Copa Libertadores title, defeating Brazil's Gremio 1-0 in aggregate in the two-leg final. The poor domestic showing, however, was enough to keep Independiente from finishing in the Top 25, though runner-up Gremio finished the season at number four.

Meanwhile, a little to the north, Violette AC, from Haiti, was awarded the title in the Copa de Campeones y Subcampeones after the rest of the potential finalists were disqualified over their inability to agree on match dates. In Africa, there was a sweep of major hardware for Egyptian clubs as Zamalek won its first African Champions Cup in 1984 with a 3-0 (agg.) victory over Nigeria's Shooting Stars and Ah-Ahly took home the African Cup Winners Cup with a penalty kick victory over Canon Yaounde, from Caermoon.

Domestically, the top five leagues in the world were won by Liverpool, VfB Stuttgart, Fluminense, Central Espanol and Juventus. The WCR Top 25 for 1984 may have been headed by Liverpool, but South American clubs, headed by Brazil, still were placing numerous clubs in the year-end rankings. The entire WCR Top 25 for 1984 is below.

World Club Rankings – Top 25 Clubs in the World – 1984

World Club Rankings - Top 25 Clubs in the World - 1985

Of course, 1985 will always be known more for the Heysel Stadium disaster, in which 39 fans lost their lives and hundreds more were injured shortly before the final of the European Cup, than for the final itself. In the wake of that tragedy, European powerhouses Liverpool and Juventus played a controversial match in which the only score was a Michael Platini penalty kick that gave Juventus a 1-0 victory and the championship. The team across town from Liverpool had a little more success, winning the Cup Winners Cup, defeating Rapid Wien 3-1 in the final. These were the last hurrahs for some time for English clubs in European action as they were banned for five years as a result of the Heysel disaster. Finally, in the UEFA Cup final, Real Madrid and Hungary's Videoton traded away victories in the championship legs, with Real Madrid finishing with a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Neither Juventus nor Liverpool managed to follow up their continental success with domestic championships. A South American club, however, did manage this feat and it helped to put that club at the top of the annual rankings in 1985. In a final for the ages, Argentinos Juniiors and America de Cali each won 1-0 victories at home in the two-leg final and then played to a 1-1 draw in the playoff match in Asuncion, Paraguay. After each club hit their first four penalty kicks, Antony de Avila missed and when Mario Videla didn't, Argentinos Juniors had won the Copa Libertadores.

Elsewhere around the world, Defence Force from Trinidad & Tobago won its first CONCACAF Copa de Campeones y Subcampeones in 1985, defeating Honduran club Olimpia 2-1 in the aggregate in the final. Olimpia's semifinal opponent, Aurora, was the defending Guatemalan champion coming into the tournament and became the first, and thus far only, club from Guatemala ever to finish in the Annual Rankings. Africa also saw a first-time champion as FAR Rabat from Morocco defeated Zaire's AS Bilima 6-3 in the two-leg AFC Champions Cup final. Meanwhile, the perennial powerhouse Al-Ahly won the AFC Cup Winners' Cup in 1985 with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Leventis United.

The way all of the action shook out in the final season rankings is identified below. (Note: Because the quarterfinals of the 2009 Copa Libertadores will conclude this week, we will be back next week with an updated WCR Weekly Ranking.)
