Liverpool have emerged as the favourites to sign Benfica attacking midfielder Nicolas Gaitan ahead of both Man City and Man Utd.
Gaitan is not a prolific scorer by any means but he knows how to open up defences and has made his way on to many a clubs radar over the last year and providing that a decent enough offer is tabled, then Benfica are expected to release the Argentinian.
It is a surprise to some extent that Liverpool have been linked with Gaitan, their midfield and forward line are not really an issue, it is their defence that is, however a large squad is required with Champions League football next season and that may well be the reasoning behind their interest.
A bid in the region of £20 million should be enough to persuade the Portuguese giants to sell a player they bought for £7 million four years ago.
