Wrexham FC's man Dean wows sell-out crowd at sportsmen's evening

A SPORTSMEN'S dinner where Wrexham FC's new manager was the star attraction proved to be a sell-out occasion.
Last month the Evening Leader reported on how NEWI Cefn Druids had pulled off a coup by booking Dean Saunders as guest speaker for Friday's sportsmen's evening – before he became Wrexham FC's manager. Tickets for the 100-seat event at Maesgwyn Hall sold like hot cakes.

Organisers say Saunders, who is also assistant manager for the Wales team, brought the house down.

They spotted the former Liverpool and Wales striker at a sportsmen's dinner at the Copthorne Hotel in Cardiff and booked him for their own event.

But then shortly afterwards, Brian Little left The Racecourse and Saunders replaced him as manager.

"Word got around and it was a sell out with a full house of 100," said Druids spokesman Keith Jarvis.

"Dean was outstanding. His tales about Brian Clough and Ron Atkinson were absolutely brilliant.

"His passion for the game and his determination to put Wrexham at the top really came through – that was the theme that came over.

"People were affected by his enthusiasm and sheer determination to do well there.

"Any Wrexham fan should hear him speak. He also said that if there was anything Wrexham FC could do to help NEWI Cefn Druids we were not to hesitate to get in touch."

Saunders, who won 75 wales caps, also played for Swansea City, Brighton, Oxford United, Derby County, Aston Villa, Turkish club Galatasaray, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United, Benfica, Bradford City and on loan for Cardiff City.

His talk also incorporated stories of his experiences playing at Anfield and in Turkey.

Former FIFA referee John Lloyd, of Wrexham, was the compere for the evening.
