Portugal U-21 international Raphaël Guerreiro is quickly establishing himself as one of the most promising left-backs in the French League.

The 20-year-old has played in every minute of FC Lorient's League games this season, as of February 25th. He has been instrumental in the club holding down a comfortable position in Ligue 1.

Guerreiro made his senior debut last season with Caen in Ligue 2 and was named to the league's Team of the Year, as a 19-year-old. He reportedly turned down a chance to sign with bigger clubs this summer in favour of more playing time at Lorient.

Born in France to a Portuguese father and a French mother, Guerreiro told French football publication So Foot in a December 2013 interview that playing for Portugal at the World Cup would be the greatest honour.

Although, he admitted that he has a lot of work to do before he could be considered for the Selecção. Portugal has depth on the left side, with Fábio Coentrão widely expected to start in Brazil.

In a September 2013 interview with the French edition of Eurosport he said that he has always felt a closer connection to his father's homeland. Before joining Caen, Guerreiro would often go on vacation in the Algarve.

Like his father, he is a supporter of Benfica. But Guerreiro's greatest ambition at club level is to play with Portugal's greatest star Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid.

Relatively unknown in Portugal before last season, Guerreiro was called to the U-21 squad for the first time in March 2013. U-21 manager Rui Jorge has regularly selected him for the squad this season as they hope to qualify for the 2015 European Championships in the Czech Republic.

He spent part of his early training at Clairefontaine, an iconic training academy near Paris that has helped develop many of France's greatest players. At only 20 years of age, Guerreiro has already demonstrated that he could play at a high level and do well. Many people are predicting a very bright future for the youngster.

In January 2014, he was named as one of the ten best young players in Ligue 1 from the first half of the season by French football publication Le 10 Sport.

Guerreiro is known for his speed and agility, which allows him to be an offensive threat on the left side. He is known for his ability to pass and deliver crosses into the box. Also, he does not neglect his defensive responsibilities.

According to the online Football statistics website Squawka, Guerreiro has completed 78 percent of his passes this season. He has also won 65 percent of his battles, which includes a 54 percent success rate in tackles. He has received only one yellow card all season in Ligue 1.

"He has all the qualities to succeed. He possesses above-average technical ability, intelligence and he always concentrates on the game. He is a humble young man who loves football," Lorient manager Christian Gourcuff said.
