Paulo Gonçalves inicia mais um Mundial de Ralis

Piloto português quer repetir a vitória alcançada em 2014 na prova árabe e marcar pontos na luta pela reconquista do título mundial.

Paulo Gonçalves inicia já este sábado, 28 de março, em Abu Dhabi, mais uma participação no Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis Todo-o-Terreno. O piloto de Esposende, vice-campeão do Mundo na modalidade e segundo classificado na última edição do Dakar, parte novamente à conquista do título mundial que foi seu em 2013 e por pouco não permaneceu nas suas mãos na época de 2014.

À semelhança do ano transato, o Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, na capital dos Emirados Árabes Unidos, marca o arranque da temporada mundial com seis dias de competição compreendidos entre 28 de março e 2 de abril.

"Estamos em Abu Dhabi para aquela que será a primeira corrida do Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis de 2015, depois da vitória alcançada o ano passado as expetativas para este ano são altas, é importante é começar bem o campeonato mas para além disso é importante também sabermos que o Campeonato vai ser bastante longo e é importante aliar a rapidez à regularidade de forma a não comprometer o resultado final", referiu Paulo Gonçalves antes do início da competição em Abu Dhabi.

Uma vez mais a integrar a equipa oficial do construtor japonês Honda, Paulo Gonçalves confessa que "a equipa HRC tem tudo preparado, estamos aqui em Abu Dhabi três pilotos com o objetivo de discutir a vitória na corrida e dentro de dois dias sensivelmente dar-se-á início ao primeiro daqueles que serão seis dias de corrida, espero que tudo corra bem à nossa equipa e que possamos sair daqui com uma vitória".

Em Abu Dhabi, Paulo Gonçalves terá como companheiros de equipa na formação oficial Honda o espanhol Joan Barreda e o norte-americano Ricky Brabec, líder em competições de Bajas nos Estados Unidos da América.

A competição no Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge 2015 tem início na tarde do próximo sábado, 28 de março, com uma curta "Super Especial" cronometrada em redor do famoso Circuito de Yas Marina.

Team HRC begins the Cross-Country Rallies World Championship in Abu Dhabi

It will be symbolic special stage at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi that raises the curtain on the 2015 FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship. Paulo Gonçalves will be out to defend his victory in last year's edition.

With the competition now celebrating twenty-five years of history, including twenty years of motorcycle racing, the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge has kicked off once more. Portugal's Honda CRF450 RALLY ace Paulo Gonçalves is poised to begin the event after having picked up top honours last time round in an event that also saw a first triumph for Honda. 'Speedy' Gonçalves sets out as current world championship runner-up.

Also on the Emirate's start-line will be Team HRC companions Joan Barreda – third in the 2014 FIM Cross-Countries Rallies World Championship – and American rookie Ricky Brabec, winner of the 2014 Bajas 250, 500 and 1000.

The Yas Marina circuit has, for the last three days, become the competition headquarters and as pre-race activities begin to wind down, the track has witnessed a display from motorcycle rally's elite, although for the time being without the clock. The chronometer comes out for tomorrow's first stage that will cover 404 kilometres, including the timed special of 262.36 km that will take the participants out into the Liwa Desert in the Al Garbia region.

This is a really important race for Team HRC as well as the other rallies in the World Championship as it is a great test ahead of the next Dakar. It will also be good to see the evolution of the new riders and to make plans for the future.

After the Dakar, we are out here in Abu Dhabi to begin the new world championship season with the intention of defending my win in last year's edition. Team HRC is ready to fight, not only for the victory here, but also for the whole of the season.

We are back in Abu Dhabi and I'm very pleased to be here once more for the opening of the season. It's a great race with five days battling up close to the rivals. This is a very intense rally; let's see how it turns out over the next few days once we get out into the desert.

Team HRC takes up positions in Abu Dhabi

Team HRC overcomes various setbacks to make it through the first day of the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge with Paulo Gonçalves and Ricky Brabec finishing the special among the front-runners in third and fifth respectively.

The asphalt of the Yas Marina circuit in the pre-rally build-up has given way to the sands of the Al Garbia region in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. Riders were today confronted with a 260 kilometre timed special in high-temperature first stage that spanned a total of 404 kilometres.

Rally raid's top guns let it be known from the start that the flavour of the day was all-out attack. Team HRC, with Joan Barreda at the helm, immediately took command, arriving at refuelling in top positions.
Spaniard Barreda had the misfortune to suffer an electrical fault some 40 km from the finish and dropped valuable time before getting the Honda CRF450 RALLY back on track and finishing the special.

Paulo Gonçalves, stopped briefly to lend a hand and sort out the glitch, conceding some time to his adversaries in the process, which he will hope to make up in tomorrow's lengthy stage.

American rookie Ricky Brabec, in his maiden outing in the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship, found himself amid top-class competition and put in a worthy debut astride the Honda CRF450 RALLY.

Tomorrow the Liwa Desert will offer the longest stage in the competition with competitors looking to tackle more than 500 kilometres of desert, 279 km of which is against the clock. Start will be as motocross style.

I had a fairly difficult day today with high temperatures and a lot of sand and dunes. I was having a tough time at the start, but I started to feel better as the speed picked up after the refuelling. I found Juan with a problem with some 40 km still to go and I stopped to help out. I lost a bit of time, but the important thing is to finish. There are four days left and I hope to be in the running for the victory.

My first day here at the rally went good but I made a rookie mistake just trying to ride through the dust and I hit something on the road which popped me up and threw me on my side. Other than that it was a good day and I'm learning the way that the navigation works. I'm riding through the sand dunes and I'm seeing all these faster guys' lines, how they approach it and how they ride down the back side of them. So today was a good day and hopefully the rest of the rally will be better.

Joan Barreda
Well, in the end it has been a complicated day. I got away very well with a really quick pace right from the start. I had some great riders up ahead and Ipushed really hard and everything was fine until we got up to CP3. Then I had an electric problem and the engine stopped– one of those things that happens. We are at the start and we have still got a whole year ahead, with the same bike and the same characteristics and the engineers are working hard and will be able to sort out any hitches and give us some more security.

Well, the first stage of the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge wasn't the perfect start for Team HRC. We've been very well-prepared to push right from the beginning and Joan was leading at the half-point at the refuelling, but he was unlucky and his bike stopped in the middle of the dunes and there was nothing that he could do. Paulo came and helped him. So, Paulo lost a bit of time and Joan had a really bad day but we will join the race again tomorrow and we'll try and make up time. Ricky had his first real rally day and did really well. We'll be looking to claw back some positions in the racing tomorrow.

No Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge

Paulo Gonçalves arranca com 3.º lugar

O piloto português que veste as cores do SL Benfica iniciou este domingo em Abu Dhabi a primeira prova do Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis Todo-o-Terreno, conquistando neste arranque do Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge 2015 o terceiro melhor tempo cronometrado.

O piloto de Esposende, oficial Honda pela HRC, rodou na frente da etapa até aos últimos quilómetros do dia, altura em que parou para apoiar um dos seus colegas de equipa, o espanhol Joan Barreda, com problemas elétricos na sua Honda. Apesar do tempo perdido, Paulo Gonçalves conseguiu ainda ser o terceiro mais rápido do dia ao longo dos 260 quilómetros cronometrados, gastando mais 5min33s que o vencedor da tirada, o espanhol Marc Coma.

"Hoje disputámos o primeiro dia do Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, um dia bastante difícil à semelhança do que era esperado, com muita areia, muitas dunas e bastante calor. Andei bastante bem mas perto do final tinha o meu companheiro de equipa parado com um problema elétrico e parei para ajudá-lo, perdi algum tempo e atrasei-me mas de todas as maneiras consegui ainda ser terceiro classificado da geral", referiu Paulo Gonçalves no final da primeira etapa em Abu Dhabi.

Instalado no terceiro lugar da geral, Paulo Gonçalves parte para o segundo dia decidido a fazer melhor e recuperar o tempo perdido nesta fase inicial da prova. "Amanhã temos uma partida ao estilo de Motocross, a corrida está ainda no início, faltam quatro dias, mais de mil quilómetros, vamos continuar na luta, temos ainda muita areia e muita duna pela frente", acrescentou.

A segunda etapa do Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge 2015 terá lugar no deserto do Liwa, oferecendo aos concorrentes mais de 500 quilómetros naquela que será a etapa mais longa da prova, dos quais 279 serão contra o relógio.

Paulo Gonçalves cumpriu a segunda de seis etapas que compõem a edição de 2015 do Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, primeira jornada do Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis Todo-o-Terreno, com a obtenção de forma estratégica do 12.º melhor tempo da tirada, exatamente o mesmo registado pelo espanhol Marc Coma, tido uma vez mais como principal adversário do piloto português na luta pelo título mundial.

"Foi um dia muito especial, muito bom, que começou ao estilo de Motocross. Rodámos juntos quase todo o dia, era importante terminar na frente na parte final, de modo a escolher a ordem de partida entre os pilotos da frente para amanhã. No final, todos abrandaram o ritmo, por isso vamos ver qual será a estratégia para amanhã. A moto está a comportar-se de forma perfeita perante uma prova tão difícil como é o Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge com um monte de areia e altas temperaturas. Estou muito satisfeito com o trabalho que tem vindo a ser desenvolvido pelo Team HRC", comentou Paulo "Speedy" Gonçalves, que veste as cores do SL Benfica.

O piloto português, Vice-Campeão do Mundo de Ralis Todo-o-Terreno em 2014 e 2.º classificado no Dakar 2015, ocupa agora o terceiro lugar da geral, a 9min03s do líder britânico Sam Sunderland e a 5min33s de Marc Coma.

Depois da etapa de hoje, Paulo Gonçalves partirá do 12.º posto para a terceira etapa, na perseguição a Coma e à vitória final. Pela frente está mais uma "especial" cronometrada de 272 quilómetros pelas dunas de Abu Dhabi.
