Handball's biggest weekend begins for thousands of devoted fans

On Friday night four thousand fans descended on the LANXESS arena terrace to celebrate the tenth edition of the VELUX EHF FINAL4.

They have one goal: supporting the four best teams of this season's VELUX EHF Champions League: PGE Vive Kielce, Telekom Veszprém HC, Barça Lassa and HC Vardar. But also the fans are in Cologne to see good handball and just enjoy the biggest event in European club handball.

As Kielce, Vardar and Barça have already lifted the VELUX EHF Champions League trophy before, Veszprém is the only club for whom a win this year would be the first title.

Significant for the incredible fans at the VELUX EHF FINAL4 is the fact that the opening party, taking place for the seventh time, was completely sold out for the first time ever and had the most attendees ever.

Gabor, a Veszprém supporter, came for the second time from Hungary and he admits that he is not only here for handball but also for the opening party.

Sascha from Cologne made the trip to the LANXESS arena just for the party – and mainly because of the band.

"I was told by colleagues that the party is taking place here. I don't have anything to do with handball but this is a nice atmosphere. We just played the tombola but lost, unfortunately. But we are really looking forward to the band!" he says.

Responsible for entertaining the fans were - among others – the band Querbeat from Cologne who met everyone's expectations. Rocking the stage with instruments like trombone, saxophone and others there could not have been a better way to start this event.

For the tenth anniversary there were some special events waiting. Fans could present themselves in a video box, showing why they love being part of the handball family – and with a bit of luck they can see themselves during the ceremony before the final on Sunday at the big screen inside the arena.

Gabor and his friends had just tried the 'video box' and for Gabor, this is the best entertainment here - next to the beer of course.

Furthermore, the 'Ball of Fame', a giant handball, was unveiled. The ball is a piece of art by an Austrian artist and represents all teams who have won the VELUX EHF Champions League.

But of course the highlight was the presentation of all four teams of this season's VELUX EHF FINAL4. And after the numerous entertainment acts had warmed up the fans enough, they came on to the stage and were cheered enthusiastically.

Straight afterwards, the hunt for selfies and autographs began in the entrance lobby of the LANXESS arena. With the fireworks at around 10 o'clock the first evening of the handball event ended – and just made the fans and everyone else keen for more.

Sara from Macedonia already thinks about the next few days.

"The matches are the reason we are here. I can barely wait anymore and hope Vardar will win the Champions League again," she says.

Stars in the sun and a family gathering

Summer has started in Cologne, one day before the tenth edition of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 gets underway. Under a bright morning sun the players and coaches of the four semi-finalists attending Friday's media call seemed to be infected by this summer mood - they were relaxed, laughing and smiling.

More than 125 journalists from all over Europe including many TV crews had gathered in the courtyard of the Radisson Blu hotel in Cologne, enjoying the mixture of sun and interviews.

"Even the weather fits perfectly in the world's capital of club handball," says EHF President Michael Wiederer, who officially opened the media call.

Almost all the players attending have been to Cologne before, but they all had different memories on returning to the hotel and the LANXESS Arena.

"When you make it here, you belong to the best four handball teams in the world, which is a great feeling," Barcelona coach Xavi Pascual says, making his seventh appearance with his team at Cologne. Despite ending the group phase at the top of Group A, from which all four teams qualified for the VELUX EHF FINAL4, Pascual is cautious in assessing his team's chances.

"When you are here at Cologne, there is no favourite role anymore," he notes.

His coaching colleague David Davis of Telekom Veszprém is always excited to return to the city with Germany's most famous cathedral. He was part of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 as a player of Ciudad Real and later on as part of the coaching staff of Vardar Skopje.

"The best memory is the atmosphere. Here in the hotel it is like a big family meeting of so many people in the handball world. You can talk to the guys you otherwise don't meet the whole year, have a coffee with them," Davis says. "And on the other hand, it is that arena, that just lets you feel like 'wow'. All those fans cheering and celebrating their teams, you cannot describe."

Two Veszprém players, Momir Ilic and Laszlo Nagy, will finish their long and successful handball career in Cologne.

"I feel so proud to be back again, and I am here to win the trophy," says Nagy, while Ilic adds: "I am here for the eighth time, and every time had been a special experience for me. I won the trophy here twice and of course I hope my last match will be crowned with another trophy."

Veszprém will face Kielce in the first semi-final on Saturday, and the Dujshebaev family's affairs are in the spotlight. Five-times Champions League winner Talant (four times as a coach, once as a player) and his son Alex (one trophy with Vardar in 2017), are crucial to the chances of the Polish champions.

"Of course, we want to win together. It would make this weekend even more special and the family party afterwards would definitely be memorable," says Alex.

His father adds: "We have a long way to the top, and we are just about to start."

In the second semi-final record winners Barca Lassa face 2017 champions HC Vardar. The club from Skopje count on their superstition due to the same composition of the semi-final against Barca like two years ago.

"We arrived with the same plane, we have the same shirts and face the same opponents, so it should work," says Christian Dissinger, who is the one and only German player on court.

"I don't know whether German fans will cheer for Vardar because of me or not, but I know that the three teams with the best fans of the globe are in Cologne, which definitely will create a great atmosphere," he says.

His teammate Igor Karacic is confident.

"This year we are coming without pressure to Cologne. Last year, as we were coming as winners, we had more weight on our shoulders and thus more pressure. So this year I am really taking pleasure and am very happy to play this FINAL4," Karacic says.

Victor Tomas, Barca's team captain, is sure that "we know what we need to do", but is also aware that in the previous years the favourites never made it to the winners' podium. All four teams still have everything to play for.

Ball of Fame unveiled in Cologne

In 2019, the VELUX EHF FINAL4 is celebrating its 10th edition in the LANXESS arena in Cologne. This milestone will be honoured with the erection of a permanent handball monument, the 'Ball of Fame', which was unveiled on Friday, 31 May during the VELUX EHF FINAL4 Opening Party.

The Ball of Fame has been placed in front of the LANXESS arena and honours all nine previous winners of the VELUX EHF FINAL4.

The monument, designed by Austrian artist Franz Staber, displays a giant handball in the centre surrounded by glass columns representing the event's winners and with the recognisable LANXESS arena arch stretching over the whole structure.

The monument is an eye-catcher for all visitors to the arena, and especially for handball fans coming to the VELUX EHF FINAL4 this year and in the future as the event will stay in Cologne at least until 2024.

EHF President Michael Wiederer unveiled the Ball of Fame and said: "Thanks to the special cooperation with Cologne and the LANXESS arena, the city has become the capital of international club handball and this needs a symbol.

"The 'Ball of Fame' is a joint project between the City of Cologne, LANXESS arena and the EHF, and has been developed together with an artist who himself is a former handball player," Wiederer said.

"The monument – which honours the nine previous winners of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 here in Cologne – will be a permanent installation dedicated to handball, the EHF Champions League and to the 20,000 fans who come to Cologne each and every year for the 'handball party of the year'."

Henriette Reker, Lord Mayor of the City of Cologne, and Stefan Löcher, Managing Director, LANXESS arena, joined Wiederer for the unveiling of the Ball of Fame.

Cologne ready for 10th VELUX EHF FINAL4

The showcase event of the men's club handball season starts on Saturday, 1 June, with the first semi-final at 15:15 between Telekom Veszprém and 2016 EHF Champions League winners PGE Vive Kielce. From 18:00, the second semi-final will see eight-time champions Barça Lassa take on HC Vardar, who lifted the EHF Champions League trophy in 2017.

On Sunday, the packed LANXESS arena will not only see the fight for the medals and the trophy but also spectacular entertainment as US duo The Score will take the centre stage before the final match and again just before the award ceremony. Matches on 2 June also throw off at 15:15 and 18:00.
