Checa/Macedónia/Hungria/Eslovénia talvez possamos ter uma palavra a dizer na passagem. Mas nunca será fácil, até porque temos pouca experiência nestas andanças.

24 teams, six groups: how the EHF EURO 2020 Draw will be done

With all 24 participants in the Men's EHF EURO 2020 now confirmed, the EHF has released the allocation of the teams over the four pots for the final tournament draw on 28 June in Vienna



The Men's EHF EURO 2020 Qualifiers experienced a dramatic finish on Sunday night as Round 6 confirmed the last of the 24 teams taking part in the final tournament from 9 to 26 January.

Apart from co-hosts Austria, Norway and Sweden as well as defending champions Spain, 20 other nations successfully navigated their way through the qualifiers to earn a berth for the first ever EHF EURO with 24 teams on the starting grid.

The preliminary round of the final tournament will be held in Graz, Vienna, Trondheim, Malmö and Gothenburg; the main-round venues are Vienna and Malmö; and the final weekend is taking place in Stockholm.

The preliminary round will consist of six groups of four teams each. The draw for this group phase will be conducted on Friday 28 June at 18:45 hrs at Erste Bank Campus in Vienna. The draw will be streamed live on the EHF EURO Youtube channel and the EHF EURO Facebook page.

Based on the qualification groups and the ranking of the EHF EURO 2018, the 24 teams are seeded as follows:

POT 1: Spain, Sweden, France, Denmark, Croatia, Czech Republic
(defending champions, organiser SWE, 4 first ranked teams of qualifiers)

POT 2: Norway, Slovenia, Germany, North Macedonia, Hungary, Belarus
(organiser NOR, 4 remaining first ranked teams of qualifiers, 1 second ranked team of qualifiers)

POT 3: Austria, Iceland, Montenegro, Portugal, Switzerland, Latvia
(organiser AUT, 5 second-ranked teams of qualifiers)

POT 4: Poland, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Netherlands
(2 second-ranked teams of qualifiers, 4 best third-ranked teams of qualifiers)

Overview of preliminary round groups

The organisers had the right to place one team each ahead of the draw. Croatia was therefore placed in Group A in Graz, Germany will play in Group C in Trondheim, and Denmark will play their first matches in Malmö.



The draw procedure will follow these steps:

3 teams from pot 1 are drawn into row 1
4 teams from pot 2 are drawn into row 2
5 teams from pot 3 are drawn into row 3
6 teams from pot 4 are drawn into row 4
In the new 24-team format of the the Men's EHF EURO there will be 65 matches played over 18 days. The top-two ranked teams from each group qualify for the two main round groups, which will consist of six teams each.

Ultimately, the semi-finals and finals will be played in Stockholm over a three-day final weekend.

Starting grid for the 2019/20 season confirmed

All 16 teams for the VELUX EHF Champions League Groups A and B and also all 12 sides for Groups C and D have been confirmed as the EHF Executive Committee members reached their decision on the teams taking part in the 2019/20 season.

In the 27th edition of the Europe's premier club competition for the last time the same playing system as last year will be used with 28 participants before the European top flight will undergo a reform of its playing system for the 2020/21 season.

No qualification to be played

After evaluating all 35 registered teams according to a criteria system that looked at eight different fields including past performances, venue, spectator, TV, marketing and media issues, the EHF Executive decided on the teams for Groups A and B and teams for Groups C and D. Because of the number of registrations received, it has also been decided that there will be no qualification tournament played in the 2019/20 season.

Based on the criteria catalogue nine requests for upgrades of the EHF Cup clubs have been approved.

The 2018 champions Montpellier HB and three-time winners THW Kiel together with the Hungarian runners-up MOL-Pick Szeged will join 13 national champions in Groups A and B.

The 1995 trophy holders Bidasoa Irun, who return to the EHF Champions League after 24 years, will play in Group C or D together with IFK Kristianstad (SWE), Sporting CP (POR), GOG (DEN), Orlen Wisla Plock (POL) and the only newcomer of the new season HC Eurofarm Rabotnik (MKD) alongside six national champions.

The remaining six requests were not granted and the Icelandic champions Selfoss were not given a green light for the participation due to not meeting minimum criteria.

In total, there will be eight former winners of the EHF Champions League (Vardar, Barcelona, Flensburg, Celje, Montpellier, Kiel, Kielce and Irun), when the group phase of the new season commence on 11-15 September. After the upcoming 2019/20 season the playing system will undergo a reform.



Next week's draw

The group phase draw will take place on Thursday 27 June at 18:00 hrs at the Erste Campus in Vienna and will be streamed on ehfTV.com but also on ehfTV YouTube channel and EHF Champions League Facebook page.

A draw preview and the seeding list with pots will be published in the beginning of next week at ehfCL.com.

Sim, enganei-me, oitavos.

Admiro-me só haver 2 equipas alemãs na champions. Um Rhein-Neckar Lowen assim é automaticamente ultra favorito a ganhar a EHF.

Quanto ao modelo, à partida sim. Mas convém fazermos uma boa época europeia (os clubes portugueses) para garantir esse lugar.

A EHF depois vai ficar com um nível muito muito alto.

Fácil nunca será mas têm o caminho mais facilitado para lá chegar que o porto, mas estes vao andar mesmo na piscina dos grandes, neste formato é uma estreia para tugas.

Segundo infos do L'Équipe, o Romain Lagarde do Nantes vai já para o Rhein-Neckar Löwen por qualquer coisa como 270.000,00€, antecipando em um ano a transferência que já estava anunciada.

Junta-se ao Uwe Genscheimer e ao Kirkelokke como grandes reforços para esta época.

Noutras notícias, penso que ninguém meteu aqui que se confirma a mudança do Luka Cindric do Kielce para o Barcelona. Super equipa, o Barça, dificilmente não limpará a Champions na próxima época com o conjunto de jogadores que tem.

Pode ser que o mercado mexa um pouco e acabe por sobrar um central em algum lado. O Nantes tem intenção de ir atrás do Fabian Böhm ou do Nikolaj Markussen, o que deve complicar muito a vida ao Alex..
