Proud, happy, relieved and a little tired. Rakel Engesvik from Verdal speaks out about the professional dream that came true on Monday evening.

LISBON: "Right now I'm feeling very, very nice," smiles Rakel Engesvik. The rumours have been going on for a long time, but on Monday evening at 20.00 the announcement came. Benfica has bought Rakel Engesvik from Brann for around NOK 700,000. Verdalingen has signed a two-year contract with the Portuguese big club.

Shortly after the signing, Engesvik took his time with Trønder-Avisa. The 26-year-old admits that the past year has been stressful. Towards the end of the summer, a bid from Benfica was rejected, but in January the club made a new offer which Brann finally accepted.

"There has been a lot of uncertainty over the past six months in terms of where I'm going to play, but at the same time I've really enjoyed my time in Bergen and Brann - even though I felt that it would have been fun to try something new this winter. A transfer to Benfica was something I wanted to do," says Engesvik.

– Det har vært mye fram og tilbake i januar. Alt fra at forhandlingene stoppet, til at det ordnet seg dagen derpå. Det har vært mye fram og tilbake. Da alt gikk i boks ble jeg veldig glad, sier Engesvik.

Hectic day Verdalingen arrived in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, on Sunday. Over the past day, it has been one after the other with a medical test, signing, media and everything that belongs to a transition.

"There have been many impressions. A bit tiring, but at the same time this is part of the package of being a football player. A fun experience and I appreciate being appreciated as much as I have been here in Benfica.

The parents from Verdal are with them in Lisbon and share moments with their daughter.

"It's nice to have mum and dad here. They are enjoying themselves very much and I think it's fun that they get to take part in this moment, says the new foreign pro.

Benfica is a superpower in European football, where the club has a whopping 392,202 paying members! This makes them the club in the world with the most members. It is also among the clubs in the world with the most trophies.

It must be said that it is the men's team that accounts for the majority of these. Benfica's women's team was founded in 2017 and has been ravaging Portugal in recent years. The team has won the league for the last four seasons and played in the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season.

Launched in front of millions of followers When Engesvik was presented on Monday, it happened on Instragram, where Benfica has 3.1 million followers.

"It's pretty sick to think about," says Engesvik.

 – What emotions do you feel now that your dream abroad is coming true?

"Right now, it's most scary. It's a bit uncomfortable to be outside your comfort zone, but it's part of the package and I just have to be happy to have the opportunity to do this. I really appreciate - and am privileged - to now be able to live abroad and play football, says Engesvik, who is quickly the first North Trøndelag football woman to become a professional football player abroad.

"It's great to be the first, but I'm guessing there are more young girls who will come after me and who will experience the same thing as long as they work hard. There are completely different types of opportunities now than a few years ago.

 – What do you know about Benfica?

"Not so much, but after coming down here, I've really seen how big the club is. It's a real city team and I'm looking forward to getting to know the team, the club and the city more.

In 2021, she was on holiday in Lisbon. Now this will be the 26-year-old's new hometown.

"I enjoyed my time here on holiday. My impression is that there are nice people, a nice city and good food. It's also a city with a lot of Norwegian students, so it doesn't feel so scary," says Engesvik, who will initially stay in a hotel before finding an apartment.

Could make his debut against a city rival On Wednesday, she will go to her first training session with her new teammates. On Saturday, the debut could come - and that against city rival and fiercest competitor Sporting CP.

"For now, I don't know if I'll be there on Saturday. I guess I'll hear more on Wednesday. Benfica leads the league, three points ahead of Sporting. The match will be played at the Estádio da Luz, which can accommodate 65,000 spectators!

"I'm looking forward to getting started. It will be fun to experience a new culture and play in a different league. I look forward to new experiences and hope we can win some games and fight for league gold. The fans have high expectations of the team, and I hope they can be met. In addition, it would be incredibly cool to have a new Champions League adventure.

Qual fogueira?
