European giants set to battle for Cork City and Ireland prospect as Leesiders boss makes admission

Ireland underage star Jaden Umeh has impressed in the Cork City first-team this season and has drawn a lot of high-profile

Benfica are preparing a summer swoop for Cork City's teenage winger Jaden Umeh - but the Portuguese giants aren't the only top continental side with an interest in the Ireland underage prospect.

Their interest in the youngster, who turned 16 earlier this year, stretches back to last summer.

And they remain the favourites to land Umeh, although a number of Serie A sides are monitoring the situation. At least one Italian outfit has registered their interest.

Tim Clancy, manager of runaway First Division leaders Cork City, admitted yesterday that the player would likely depart in the upcoming transfer window.

Because of Brexit rules, Umeh cannot move to the UK - where his brother Franco plays with Crystal Palace - until he turns 18, so the door is wide open for continental clubs to make their move.

"It's a lot longer for Jaden to sit tight for the UK market so I would imagine Jaden will probably get a move in the upcoming window," said Clancy.

"He has been outstanding for us as well. When you realise, he's only 16 it's ridiculous how good he is for that age. We'd like to keep them in the first team here, we want to develop them, win things, be successful at the club.

"You have to accept that players are going to have ambitions to play in the UK or further afield."

Benfica-bound Irish teenager Jaden Umeh to have knee injury assessed in Portugal

Benfica-bound Irish teenager Jaden Umeh is due to travel to Portugal for assessment of a knee injury that has proved more serious than the initial prognosis.

The highly-rated Cork City player has agreed to join Benfica this summer having turned 16 in March and there is no suggestion that the deal is in jeopardy because of the setback.

But the exciting attacker's soon-to-be employers want to help with managing the problem that was sustained in a League of Ireland First Division match against Treaty United last month.

It's understood that Umeh has an issue with his cartilage which looks likely to rule him out until later in the autumn.

The younger brother of Crystal Palace starlet Franco has long been identified as one of the most talented up and coming players in the country.

Benfica have been on his trail for some time, conscious of the post-Brexit reality which means he could not move to England until he turns 18. Serie A clubs have also monitored his progress closely.

Despite his tender age, Umeh has broken into Tim Clancy's first team and has made 15 league appearances this season, albeit with nine of those coming off the bench.

He hit the target on the road against both Wexford and Finn Harps.

Clancy did confirm recently that Umeh had indicated he would be moving on in the summer window, but he will start the next phase of his life in recuperation mode.
