How does the competition work?

  • The centrepiece is a 16-team group stage, which will involve four groups of four playing each other home and away between October and December. The top two from each group progress to the knockout phase from March, with the quarter-finals and semi-finals played over two legs, and a one-off final.

  • Four teams will qualify directly for the group stage with the other 12 spots decided by two routes: champions path (7 qualifiers) and league path (5 qualifiers).

  • Both paths will have the same format. Round 1 will be played as four-team knockout mini-tournaments with the final winners progressing. Round 2 will be played as two-legged knockout ties. If there are more than 50 associations entering, the champions path will have a two-legged preliminary round.

How many teams does each association enter?

  • The access list is determined by the UEFA Women's Association Club Coefficients at the end of the 2020/21 season.
  • The six highest-ranked associations have three entries: France, Germany, England, Spain, Sweden, Czech Republic.
  • The next ten highest-ranked associations have two entries: Denmark, Netherlands, Kazakhstan, Italy, Iceland, Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, Belarus, Austria.
  • Every other association is entitled to one entry.

Who enters when?

  • The title holders Lyon and the champions of the three highest-ranked associations (France, Germany and England) will enter in the group stage. As Lyon also won the French league, the champions of the fourth association also begin in the group stage, meaning Barcelona join Wolfsburg, Chelsea and OL.

  • The champions of the remaining associations will go into the champions path. The champions of the associations ranked 5 to 7 (Sweden, Czech Republic, Denmark) will enter in Round 2, with the rest entering in Round 1.

  • The runners-up of the six highest-ranked associations (France, Germany, England, Spain, Sweden, Czech Republic) will enter in Round 2 of the league path.

  • The third-placed teams of those six associations, and the runners-up of the next ten highest-ranked associations (Denmark, Netherlands, Kazakhstan, Italy, Iceland, Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, Belarus, Austria) will enter in Round 1 of the league path.

Women's Champions League entries confirmed

Holders Lyon lead 71 clubs from 49 different associations hoping to win the competition.


Lyon will aim to make it nine titles in 2022/23

A total of 71 teams from 49 different associations will take part in the 2022/23 UEFA Women's Champions League.

In all, 58 clubs will be involved in the round 1 draw streamed live at 13:00 CET on Friday, with nine more starting in round 2 and four entering directly in the 16-team group stage. The debutants include the likes of Real Sociedad, Roma and Rangers.

Who enters when?

• The access list was determined by the UEFA women's association club coefficients at the end of the 2020/21 season.

• The holders and the champions of the three highest-ranked associations (France, Germany and England) enter in the group stage. As Lyon are both title holders and champions of France, the champions of the fourth-ranked association (Spain) also enter in the group stage, meaning Barcelona join Lyon, Wolfsburg and Chelsea.

• The champions of the remaining associations will go into the champions path. The champions of associations ranked 5 to 7 (Sweden, Czech Republic and Denmark) will enter in round 2, with the rest (ranked 8 to 50, with Russia excluded) entering in round 1.

• KÍ Klaksvík and Sarajevo are entering for a record 20th time (including the pre-2009 UEFA Women's Cup). Sarajevo will set a new outright record of 20 straight appearances as Brøndby have missed out for the first time since they made their debut in the third UEFA Women's Cup edition of 2003/04.

• Lyon will aim for a record ninth title having claimed their eighth last season. Eintracht Frankfurt won four titles under their previous guise of FFC Frankfurt. Barcelona, Wolfsburg and Arsenal are also past champions, while Fortuna Hjørring, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea are the other teams that have previously reached the final.

• Paris Saint-Germain and Wolfsburg lost in last season's semi-finals; Arsenal, Bayern, Juventus and Madrid reached the quarters. Also hoping for a group stage return are Benfica, Breidablik, Chelsea, Häcken, HB Køge and Servette.

• Debuts: Brann, KuPS, Ljuboten, Lokomotiv Stara Zagora, Rangers, Real Sociedad, Roma, Spartak Myjava, Tomiris-Turan, UKS SMS Łódź.

Women's Champions League round 1 draw live on Friday

The draw, streamed at 13:00 CET on 24 June, will set the knockout mini-tournaments to be played on 18 and 21 August.



The UEFA Women's Champions League round 1 draw will be streamed live from Nyon, Switzerland, at 13:00 CET on Friday 24 June.

Round 1 is one of two rounds before the 16-team group stage, which begins in October. Qualifying will be split into two sections: the champions path and the league path. In both paths, round 1 will consist of two stages, each of one-off knockout matches played in single-venue mini-tournaments: semi-finals (18 August) and finals/third-place play-offs (21 August).

The winners of each final (11 in the champions path, four in the league path) will progress to round 2, where 24 teams will compete for the last 12 slots in the group stage alongside holders Lyon and fellow direct entrants Barcelona, Chelsea and Wolfsburg.

The hosts of the knockout mini-tournaments will be confirmed from among the clubs in each group.

Champions path draw

  • The 42 teams entering at this stage are the champions of the associations ranked eighth and below (with Russia excluded).

  • They will be drawn into 11 single-venue knockout mini-tournaments: nine of four clubs and two with three teams.

  • The winners of the finals will progress to round 2, into which three teams have direct entry. Seven group stage places will be on offer in round 2.

League path draw

  • Sixteen teams will enter at this stage: the runners-up from the associations ranked seventh to 16th and the third-placed teams from the associations ranked first to sixth.

  • They will be drawn into four knockout mini-tournaments of four teams each.

  • The winners of the four finals will progress to round 2, into which six teams have direct entry. Five group stage places will be on offer in round 2.

Draw procedure

  • Clubs are seeded for round 1 in accordance with the club coefficient rankings established at the beginning of the season.

  • In the champions path, the teams are divided into two pots: Pot 1 (seeded, 22 teams) and Pot 2 (unseeded, 20 teams).

  • Teams are drawn into two semi-final ties within each four-team group, with the teams in Pot 1 designated as the 'home' teams of semi-finals 1 and 2 respectively (regardless of the host club). In each final and third-place match, the team with the highest coefficient in each case is designated as the 'home' team.

  • For the two champions path groups with three teams, the side with the highest coefficient is seeded directly to the final; the remaining two teams play a single-leg tie.

  • In the league path, the 16 teams are divided into two pots of eight teams (Pot 1, seeded and Pot 2, unseeded).

  • Sides are drawn into two semi-final ties within each four-team group, with the teams in Pot 1 designated as the home teams of semi-finals 1 and 2 respectively.

  • Based on UEFA Executive Committee decisions valid at the time of the draw, clubs from the following pairs of associations cannot be drawn into the same group: Kosovo/Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo/Serbia, and Ukraine/Belarus.
