Olympiacos Piraeus

Faliro

Something happened today at the Karaiskaki that I have never seen in my life - anywhere on the globe.

Bento attempted to make his first substitution. The ref saw it and stopped play to allow the substitution. Tarik Elyounoussi was to be subbed for Marin. As soon as the 4th official raised Marin's number meaning he would go off - the whole stadium booed unhappy that Marin would leave the pitch. The stadium booed loud. Marin stood there shell shocked - he was shrugging to the crowd as if saying 'why should I go off?' Bento quickly ran to the 4th official and cancelled the substitution!! So Marin stayed on! Then a few minutes later Bento decided to take off Fortounis for Elyounoussi  - that was also met with boos but this time he stuck with his guns.

:crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2:

To be fair, in that video looks like the fourth refere got it wrong and Paulo Bento made it right.

To be fair, in that video looks like the fourth refere got it wrong and Paulo Bento made it right.

The video makes it looks that way - and the English commentator - but that is not what happened. Here is what happened. Marin was told to come out for Tarik by the 4th official. The stadium boos, Marin looks confused. Bento rushes to the 4th official to cancel the change - not change the number! Notice the 4th official does not hurriedly change any numbers on his board as is usually the case when a mistake is made but just stands there numb and also just looks confused while doing nothing. The video then cuts to the change that was eventually made - two minutes later. What the video doesn't show - (notice the video starts again two minutes after the first failed sub) is Bento returning to the bench and putting his head in his hands. The 4th official and Tarik leave the touch line and return to the bench and side lines respectively. Then Bento speaks to his assistant after another minute of silence and the whole process starts again - this time with a new player coming off - Fortounis.

Even more bizarrely, Tsori was sure he was going to come on in the second sub later on. He got ready, warmed up and then was told he was not needed. He was confused - even Fortounis was who tried to cheer him up on the bench. You can see the video of that incident here:

Those are just fait-divers. Irrelevant things people focus on when there's nothing else to talk about.

Olympiacos were unlucky today. Things will be better if you give Bento enough time to rebuild the squad. Yes, because that's what we're talking about here. Rebuilding an ageing squad, with ageing players who've won it all in the past, all stuck in a peripheral league and earning their retirement money. Not an easy squad to movivate from the get-go. And with young Greek players. In a club accostumed to winning day in and day out. It's not easy.

Bento needs time to implement whatever it is he believes in. Problem is, Olympiacos does not usually give any coach time when there are bad results. A bad result against AEK at the Karaiskaki and anything could happen.

Sunday will be war. I think Bento will probably be coaching for his job. AEK are not that strong - but they are highly motivated. Will be a very good game to watch. Starts 18.30 GMT. Benfica TV still showing Super League games?

I have 10 euros invested in Olympiacos. I hope you can beat AEK (let's forget about an awkward defeat against Apoel)....
