outhampton had a representative in Portugal on Saturday night watching Benfica beat Moreirense 3-2, report A Bola. The match was an exciting one and Nicolas Gaitan was Man of the Match with Jonas having a good game too. It's not clear what Southampton's specific mission was for their representative on Saturday evening but it's obviously transfer related.

If the Premier League club decided they'd like to spend big, around €30m, then they could get themselves Gaitan, if the player agreed. Gaitan has repeatedly been linked with moves to Manchester United and Valencia but nothing has come of it despite years of rumours.

Benfica have taken on Jorge Mendes to try and get them a good deal for Gaitan but with a couple of days of the window left he's still at Benfica. Mendes is considered the best in the business but time is running out.

Gaitan is just one possible target for Southampton and, whilst perhaps unlikely, it's possible they could have been watching someone from the opposition Moreirense instead. Southampton were in good company, with officials from Atletico Madrid, Rayo Vallecano, and FC Koln also at the Portuguese match.
