Benfica has been in financial trouble since the 1980s.
Only such a big club to handle decades of shitty presidents and their teams.

The victim on this case is the club, who got robbed by Vieira (the former president) and his band of thieves (most of them still in the club, at the moment).
The players were a way to take money out of the clube and into whatever Vieira wanted: paying/renegotiating his debts to banks, deals with other clubs like Vitória Setúbal, payments of his personal business in Portugal and elsewhere...

But we have no one to defend the club because if they do that, things will be known and they'll all go to jail as they're all accomplices of Vieira.
