Official. Retsos signs with Leverkusen. €22 million. Highest Greek transfer in history.
Good deal for both clubs.

Retsos will be great to follow in the Bundesliga.

Hello! Why is your stadium so small? Why only 34.000 seats for such na important club?

The original stadium Olympiacos were building in the 60s at Rendi (now our training centre - located just outside Faliro) was to be 120,000 seats. I know.. crazy right? Construction started and the foundations were laid but then money issues stopped the project. The ruins of the construction could still be seen at Rendi a while ago and I think from a sat you may still be able to make out the imprint. This is the 120,000 stadium we were building:

How the Karaiskaki came about is simply out of a good deal. For the 2004 Olympics there was money to develop one football only stadium for the final. AEK's stadium (the biggest in Greece) had just been demolished and Olympiacos cleverly got the Olympic committee to build a brand new stadium on the site of the old Velodrome (old Olympiacos stadium).  The only proviso was we would have to share the stadium with Ethnikos (the other Piraeus team that never asked us in the end to use the stadium).

So we ended up with the Karaiskaki - the most modern stadium in Greece. However pretty soon it appeared the stadium was too small for our needs. So structural engineers were employed to examine how to expand the stadium. Specifically they looked at the earth or rock composition under the stadium as an increased capacity would need deeper foundations. Unfortunately they found sand under the stadium (it is very near the beach) and said it would not be feasible to increase the capacity.

Another issue is Greeks like small stadiums. Remember for example when AEK president Demis Nikolaidis (former Atletico striker) wanted to build AEK a new 60k stadium in Ano Liossia (5 mins from Nea Filadelfeia)? Original 21 (AEK hooligans) chased him out the club. All AEK fans seem happy their new stadium will be on a small site and only 32,000... but on the historic NF site. They don't really think too far into the future in Greece.

We usually play with four. It is hard to say because injuries prevented Cisse making an appearence so far. We can choose from either:

1/ (most likely so far)

Elabdellaoui..............Engels.............Botia............Koutris

2/

Figuieras...................Engels..........Cisse..............Milić

If we made a second super league team out of our second team - they would come second in Greece behind our main team. That is how reinforced we are this year.

Mirallas almost came back to the club. That would have been awesome! Mirallas + Carcela on the wings looks like a good time.

BTW I've just came across your website and I've got to say, you know how to get outside fans to get to know the club and such.

Yes. He was on the Karaiskaki pitch tonight at half time (Greece vs Belgium). The whole stadium cheered his name. He acknowledged the crowd and held his chest in respect. After the game he stated he tried with everything he had to return to Olympiacos this summer - for himself and for his family who wish to return to Greece - however Everton sabotaged him.  He will try again in January.

I'm glad you like it. It was set up to appeal to anyone who wants to discuss Greek football in English. Also I have set up forums for all the other leagues across Europe and the globe. Feel free to join up!

Hey! Don't mock! Greece is loaded with people whose cousins played for clubs no one has heard of! I used to go out with a girl whose uncle played for Real Zaragoza.

BTW just created a topic Portugal Primeira Liga in case there is a sudden influx of Benfiquistas!  :buck2:
