The Champions League anthem will ring out again at the BayArena on Wednesday night (20.45 CET). The Werkself play host to Benfica on matchday two of the group stage. Benfica dominated Portuguese football last season but the departure of many key performers and the new policy of saving money, introduced by the club bosses, has forced coach Jorge Jesus to build a new team using his second-string players.

There were a lot of question marks at Benfica ahead of the current campaign. A number of players sought new challenges after winning the domestic double and finishing as losing finalists in the Final of the UEFA Europa League last term. Benfica lost seven potential first-choice players with the departure of goalkeeper Jan Oblak (Atlético Madrid), central defender Ezequiel Garay (Zenit St. Petersburg), full back Guilherme Siqueira (FC Granada), holding midfielder André Gomes (FC Valencia), winger Lazar Markovic (Liverpool), strikers Óscar Cardozo (Trabzonspor) and Rodrigo (FC Valencia). The transfer window closed with healthy financial surplus as the Portuguese giants were fully focussed on making savings at the club.

Chance to shine

Instead of replacing the departed talents with equally established players with international experience the club sought to introduce second string players to the team. "Making progress in this area will take a bit longer this year," predicted Benfica coach Jesus. That assessment might have been a bit hasty: After six games, the 33-time Portuguese champions and 25-time domestic cup winners are unbeaten at the top of the table in Portugal with 16 points. The recipe for success is easily explained: Coach Jesus has kept faith with the tried and tested 4-4-2 formation he played last season in spite of the numerous transfers in the summer. As most of the replacements have come from within the squad the current first team players are well aware of the approach to the game favoured by the coach. In addition, the two new signings in Jesus' reformed starting eleven have impressed. Left back Eliseu and forward Talisca have both done a good job so far. The Brazilian youngster is the top scorer in Portugal with five goals to date this term.

The stars in the team are central defender and captain Luisao, playmaker and World Cup player Enzo Perez plus winger Nicolás Gaitán. A regular up front is the Brazilian Lima who scored 21 goals in 52 games last season. His strike partners from the last campaign, Óscar Cardozo (32 games, 11 goals) and Rodrigo (42 games, 18 goals), are now plying their trade at other clubs. It remains to be seen whether the new South American signings Talisca, Derley and Franco Jara can can make their mark alongside. They all need to show they can perform on the European stage. The Lisbon club's squad includes former Hamburg SV player Ola John.

Desire for European success

Expectations in the Portuguese capital have not diminished despite the self-imposed austerity drive. Benfica want to retain the double but there is still a massive desire to succeed in European competition after losing the Europe League Final twice in succession against Chelsea (2013) and Sevilla (2014). The club with the highest membership in the world lost 4-2 on penalties to the Spanish side in Turin. The biggest success in the club's history to date was winning the European Cup twice in 1961 and 1962 – with the legend Eusébio who died this year. The Portuguese giants are looking to establish a new golden age at the Lisbon club.

The team led by coach Jesus made an unimpressive start to the group stage of the Champions League. Benfica lost 2-0 to Zenit St. Petersburg at the Estadio da Luz on matchday one – and they also lost goalkeeper Artur Moraes when he was sent off for a professional foul on 18 minutes. Benfica are already under pressure to perform against Bayer 04 on Wednesday night.

dafuq digo eu, mas que raios... não querendo desvalorizar o Arouca, mas o Benfica tem equipa mais que suficiente para rodar um aqui e acola contra eles e ter toda a obrigação de ganhar e não sofrer... aliás até digo, que podia rodar a equipa toda que teria sempre obrigação de vencer, joga em casa contra um dos adversários teoricamente mais fracos, se não roda contra Aroucas desta vida, não se pode rodar contra equipa nenhuma.

No campeonato é para entrar sempre com o melhor 11, nem que seja contra o Estarreja! Não se pode dar abébias no Tugão, ali tem que ser sempre equipa a 100% e concentração máxima. Ainda mais agora que temos uma boa vantagem, não podemos dar um mm que seja à concorrência.
Enquanto não forem pelo menos 15 pontos de avanço não há cá poupanças. E mesmo assim..
