Parks is an interesting case. He's a versatile central midfielder who played high school soccer at Frisco Liberty for three years and never joined a Development Academy side in the DFW. That kept his radar profile low, and when he went abroad to Varzim hardly anyone took notice.

This move, if it's happening as it seems to be, did not occur in a vacuum. Parks scored twice in two matches in December, the first on Dec. 17 in a 2-0 win over Famalicão and the second four days later in an eventual 2-1 win over Fafe. Benfica clearly felt strongly enough about what it had that it felt the compulsion to extend a deal.

Practically, not much will change in the short term. Parks isn't switching leagues, and Benfica B is just one point above Varzim in the table (and so long as Benfica is in the top flight, which is always and forever, Benfica B can't be promoted). But it does represent a conduit to a Champions League club, and Benfica in turn is a conduit to the broader world of European transfers. This is a Big Move For An American by almost any objective measurement.

The history of Americans in Portugal is a truncated one. Aside from Parks, the number of Americans who've darkened Portuguese soccer doors is incredibly short. Most recently, Erik Palmer-Brown spent some time on loan at Porto B, and the Portuguese giant and SKC have been involved in a frustrating, unresolved back-and-forth over a transfer ever since. Otherwise, Parks is more or less the end of the road.

At the very least, it looks like he's moving up in the world. Perhaps it's only a matter of time until he's no longer the most under-the-radar American in Europe.
