He wears his first name - which is very rare for Greek players. I spose it is a beautiful name and that is why.



I was christened with the names (among others..) Themistokles (meaning Glory of Justice) and Perikles (meaning Surrounded by Glory) but do not use them.    The ancient Greek names are exceptionally beautiful - always happy when Greeks use them because 80% of Greek men are either called John (Giannis), George (Georgos), Peter (Petros), Kostantinos, Andreas, Michaelis (Michael) etc. The ancient Greek pagan names surpass those imo... but then again.. I am intrigued by the classical age.

Average. Not the natural talent of Greek keepers such as Gianniotis but ok. I am not sure why Benfica picked him. Maybe to sell on or loan? He is 100% Greek genetically but probably mostly German culturally which is a plus. Could improve with proper coaching. I don't think you paid much for him (he was free?), so probably a good piece of business.

He needs work on positioning in my opinion. He is fairly good on coming out to intercept attacks. Fairly good shot blocker. OK in the air (crosses). However free kicks and well placed shots from outside the box he can find himself in the wrong position. He needs professional coaching - that is one of the reasons he is not in the Greek NT. Still young for a keeper. Still time.

A lot of a player's success is down to luck. A good start could lead to good things. Hopefully he realises - unlike Panathinaikos,  Benfica is a big club - an important European club and he raises his ability because of this. Hopefully his German work ethic shines through - as well as his Greek bravery.
