Rui Costa: Lessons From The Maestro

The first leg Champions League qualifier match that pitted SL Benfica against FC Copenhagen for a place in the European sun this season saw a familiar name light up the da Luz scoreboard twice. Portuguese playmaker Rui Costa, who some believed was a spent force, is starting off his seventeenth professional season in no small style, so what lessons can we learn from the maestro...?



zoom - galleria Benfica number 10 Rui Manuel César Costa was the name of the game at Benfica's atmospheric stadium against the Danish visitors, scoring a brace that allowed the hosts to claim first blood in the two-leg knockout.  The 35 year-old veteran managed to eclipse other younger team-mates who were expected to hog the limelight. 

Paraguayan tower Óscar Cardozo – the second-most expensive signing in Benfica's history after the recently-departed Simão Sabrosa – and Ghanaian-American prodigy Freddy Adu –were both left in the shadow by a man who was already delighting fans when they the most dribbling they'd done was with their mouths as babies.

The number 10 scored once in each half, his first a sweet spot strike from middle distance that echoed one he'd netted almost exactly a year ago, Hutchinson equalising ten minutes later, while his second reclaimed a lead which would end in victory for the Lisbon Águias (Eagles) – and a yellow card for Rui Costa.

The reason for the ref whipping out a card was as logical as Rui's response was emotional.  The FIFA rulebook is clear and the man in black has no choice but to respond to what is deemed as 'unsporting behaviour' and booked the player for pulling his shirt off in a typical gesture as Rui screamed with raging joy in celebration.

"Everybody knows that I'm an emotional player and I was so glad to prove that I've still got what it takes to deserve a place in a team at this level", explained the man himself in the afterglow, also thankful that the end of the game was marked by a winning goal and not by an injury flaring up – something that plagued his last season.

"I'm over the moon but the first goal reminded me a lot of the one against Austria Vienna last year and what came after that", he said of the match where he picked up the apparently minor problem that became a major pain.  This blighted his return to Lisbon after twelve years in the Italian elite and caused him to consider retiring.

The source was a knock that led to him coming off sixty-six minutes into last year's match after opening the path to a 3-0 win. Rui himself was anaesthetised by his own emotions and adrenalin, not realising that the ache would became such a pain.  "I'd do anything for all games to end like that", he commented in the post-match press conference.

"It was wonderful with three unforgettable moments: to be back in an official game playing for Benfica after 12 years; my goal, which was important as it paved the way for our qualification and the applause as I went off which would warm the heart of any player", he explained with a beaming grin.

The injury was (mis)diagnosed as next to nothing by the Benfica medical board and gradually worsened as a mix of the midfielder's emotions and faith in the medical team (who in turned blamed a badly interpreted magnetic resonance scan taken at CREAR), led Rui Costa to push it when he should have been resting more.

After just four games Rui Costa made it back to help his beloved Benfica as the Encarnados had harvested a mixed bag of a slim win against Nacional and a frustrating draw against Paços de Ferreira.  The Champions League was even less productive; Benfica scraping a dull draw in Copenhagen and falling to Manchester United at Luz.

While playing the next match against Desportivo das Aves at Luz the original oedema (known as edema in the US; a type of internal swelling in muscle tissue) worsened into a two-centimetre tear in Rui's right thigh: something that should have been identified before time but wasn't, leading to a long lay-off with an operation in the offing.

"How could this be? How could this be? How could this be?" the shocked number 10 repeated after finding out what was supposed to be a simple oedema had complicated so much.  His initial state of shock ameliorated after a gloomy period of considering throwing the towel in and Rui Costa started on a cautious road to recovery.

"To be laid up for so long is something that really hits you hard emotionally, but I want to overcome this problem, recover fully and help Benfica to be champions again...It's fairly obvious that neither I nor the Benfica medical department can risk taking a guess at when I'll be back to playing", he admitted with renewed determination to return...but carefully this time.

"We don't want to set false hopes or make dangerous estimates.  After this injury I want to be certain that the leg's alright", he stressed before receiving the 2006 Alto Prestigio (High Prestige) award from the Portuguese sporting confederation.  He returned in February of this year in a draw against Boavista but the 2006-7 season was already tainted.

Now Rui Costa, O Maestro, has another chance to help the club he adores back to silverware success.  The brace comes almost 14 years after his last European brace for the Águias on the 20th of October 1993, part of a warmly-remembered Benfica helmed by Toni and starring the number 10 in a 3-1 home win that featured two Rui Costa goals.

The season ended with European anguish as the Águias were downed in the semi-finals by Parma, but ended with a triumphant flourish as Benfica were crowned Portuguese league champions.  That season had a tang of bittersweetness as Rui Costa bade farewell as he swapped Benfica for Fiorentina in exchange for 6 million Euros.

To give an idea of the depth of his feelings for the club he returned to in 2006, a friendly match as part of the deal with Fiorentina took place at the old Estádio da Luz (pulled down in 2002 to be rebuilt for the Euro), Rui Costa scored for the Viola but, instead of celebrating, he cried and later said that the one against Benfica was the worst goal he ever scored.

The lessons that we can learn from O Maestro are varied.  Rui Costa still gives weekly masterclasses on how to treat a ball, how to join forces with team-mates, how to take a top-flight career into the mid-thirties...even how to overcome repetitive physical adversities, but there is a greater lesson that is perhaps being lost in modern football.

With so many players having their careers guided by agents and motivated by cold-blooded, cool-headed monetary considerations and advertising contracts we a rarely get to see a player whose hot-blooded love for a club continues to gush uncontrollably from the bottom of his heart.  It may be old school but it's a lesson that Rui Costa continues to deliver in style.

Impressionou-me muito esta fotografia de Rui Costa.

O momento captado mostra o médio do Benfica no Estádio da Luz depois de ter marcado o segundo golo contra o FC Copenhaga. A expressão de Rui Costa é enigmática. De certa forma, também é reveladora de uma maneira particular de estar no futebol, íntegra e apaixonada. Não consigo recordar com rigor o antes e o depois deste instantâneo. Vi os golos em repetição televisiva. Vi o jogo a espaços. Ainda assim arrisco uma leitura deste rosto de grito contido, de herói carismático.

Rui Costa não é um jogador novo (muitos com a sua idade já penduraram as botas). Já não é um jogador rápido. E aguenta com dificuldade os 90 minutos de uma partida. Mas tem, dos pés à cabeça, duas características que o transformam num jogador raro nos relvados portugueses: experiência e inteligência.

Durante a pré-época, e até antes de assinar de novo pelo clube que o lançou, soaram daqui e dali críticas à aposta na sua continuidade como um dos pivôs do jogo do Benfica do meio campo para a frente. No primeiro jogo oficial do clube da Luz esta época, parece que Rui Costa foi um dos poucos a remar contra a maré, ou seja, a remar contra a mediocridade em que está mergulhada a sua equipa. A tal ponto que vi escrito em algum lado que não foi o Benfica que ganhou o jogo contra o Copenhaga, mas sim Rui Costa. Dois remates certeiros de fora da área no mesmo jogo não acontecem muitas vezes. Aconteceram a Rui Costa nesta partida porque, creio, ele era um jogador acossado na sua dignidade. Os golos de longe não são uma novidade nos seus pés. Mas estes revestiram-se de uma importância particular, porque significaram não só uma esperança, ainda que vaga, da continuidade da sua equipa na Liga dos Campeões, mas também o reafirmar da sua classe como jogador e a reposição da sua honra no relvado.

Esta expressão grave, de dentes cerrados, revela um jogador ferido que foi obrigado a recuperar o brilho fazendo extraordinariamente bem aquilo que sempre soube fazer bem, ultrapassando-se.
Este rosto ainda queimado pelo sol das férias relembra a parangona que diz "quem sabe nunca esquece", ainda que nos pés venha ainda colada alguma areia fina das praias do Algarve.
Esta cara de alegria travada, de alegria que parou antes de chegar à garganta, mostra um jogador renascido e de novo amado por aquilo que é e por aquilo que sabe fazer, sem grandes piruetas nem mortais à retaguarda.
Esta cara tem um olhar incerto, abstracto, para lá do círculo do estádio. É um olhar perdido de alguém que foi reencontrado por milhares em êxtase à sua volta, por milhões a olhar para si.
Esta cara é quase a ausência de emoção no meio do turbilhão de emoções que rebentam depois da bola entrar na baliza. É também uma cara de pequena vingança para quem menosprezou, espezinhou e foi malcriado. É a cara de um homem que, num momento de comunhão e adrenalina total, quis ficar só. Como quem enfrenta a besta sem gritar pela 7ª Companhia.

E, contudo, não é a primeira vez que Rui Costa remata de muito longe um tiro certeiro para repor o seu brio, para nos mostrar a entrega com que veste a camisola. Aconteceu nos quartos-de-final do Euro 2004 contra a Inglaterra, quando era um dos mal-amados da selecção. Aconteceu quando marcou o terceiro golo de Portugal, um golo decisivo numa vitória histórica. Aí, lembro-me bem, Rui Costa abriu os braços, fechou os punhos e gritou.

Foi só uma forma diferente de dizer: "contem comigo, estou aqui!".

Não sei se já existe um tópico de Rui Costa... mas de qualquer forma gostei. Rui Costa tem provado que está aí para as curvas. E tem uma coisa fundamental para futebolistas da sua idade: o seu prazer em jogar é mais que óbvio.

Para não cair em exageros, apenas digo que Rui Costa é Deus. Outra imagem linda é após o primeiro golo, quando distribui um beijo pelos quatro cantos do estádio e fecha os olhos durante uns momentos. Muita alma befiquista transpira o nosso Rui. Tê-lo de volta é uma alegria indescritível!

Rui Costa, disse sempre so jogava quando sentisse que podia jogar em condições, mas a alegria dele jogar com a camisola do benfica, acho que com 45 anos o Rui ainda estava em condições tecnicas, e psicologicas, relação unica merece acabar a carreira em grande, vencedor da liga dos campeoes pelo benfica
