Hey!

Things are finally done, I have officially signed with Benfica! I can not even tell you how happy I am...I have tears in my eyes writing this blog right now. Playing for a BIG club Europe has been a lifelong dream of mine and it's finally happened. Wow, I'm speechless right now. I've said publicly many times that I wanted to go to Europe after 4 years in the MLS, and I was able to accomplish that in 3 and a half years. It just makes me happy to know that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to, even when people were down on me and were saying negative things.

Thanks to EVERYONE that has posted comments on my website in the last few weeks! A special thank you to all the Benfica fans that have posted...I read ALL the comments, they meant a lot to me and helped with my decision making. Knowing that you all supported me, and most importantly wanted me to be a part of the club, made me feel good about coming to Portugal. I hope you continue to share my experiences with me on www.freddyadu.com To my fans, sponsors and teammates at RSL and DC United, I couldn't have done it without you. Thank you.

On another note I LOOOOOVE Portugal. What a beautiful country and great people! Playing for Benfica will have its benefits...my teammates are very cool and half of them speak fluent English which will help A LOT! The stadium is unreal and I can not wait to step foot on it. All in all I am the happiest I've been in a long time. It feels like everything has turned out the way it was supposed to.

Let's GO BENFICA!!!!!!

Once in a lifetime
Adu dishes on his move to Portugal, MLS swan song

On Wednesday night SI.com snagged the first interview with Freddy Adu since the 18-year-old U.S. attacking midfielder signed a five-year contract with the Portuguese powerhouse Benfica.

Adu is coming off a standout performance at the Under-20 World Cup, and his move to European soccer ends a three-and-a-half year MLS career with D.C. United and Real Salt Lake that was marked by insanely high expectations when he signed with the league at 14, occasional highlight-reel moments and (let's be honest) a fair amount of frustration by both Adu and his MLS coaches.

MLS agreed to sell Adu to Benfica for a $2 million transfer fee, which seems low at first, but it was also the result of some uncommon circumstances. The guaranteed part of Adu's four-year MLS contract was set to end after this season, and MLS figured it should get something for Adu instead of letting him go on a free transfer at the end of this season.

While MLS retained another two-year league option on Adu, it was unlikely that any MLS teams would be willing to use a precious Designated Player slot (and pay Adu's salary, which was set to rise to around $750,000) on an 18-year-old whose career is still about potential. Benfica, on the other hand, has no salary cap to worry about and can still invest in Adu's potential, whereas an MLS team wouldn't want to with a player who has repeatedly stated his desire to move to Europe.

In our conversation, Adu touched on several topics, including his reasons for going to Benfica, his desire to play immediately, his explanation for performing better at the U-20 World Cup than in MLS, the lessons he learned in MLS, his advice for top MLS prospect Jozy Altidore and his excitement to join his new team.

SI.com: What were the reasons that made you finally decide in the end that Benfica was the right club for you?

Adu: Well, I had a lot of help in making that decision. Before the Under-20 World Cup I felt like I wanted to play for four years in MLS and then leave, so I was kind of trying to leave in the winter transfer window. But I had a lot of help from guys like Trevor [Moawad, Adu's mental-conditioning coach] and Michael Johnson [the former track-and-field star and a close adviser], who I talked to for over a week. These guys were like, "You know what: You're hot right now, your stock is high and Benfica is one of the biggest clubs in the world, so what are you waiting for?"

I was like, this is my life and my career. For about a week I thought about it a lot. I had headaches thinking about it, but Benfica has developed some of the best players in Europe, and they have a great tradition, a great stadium and a great following. This happens once in a lifetime, and I need to take full advantage of that, and I finally decided I wanted to go.

SI.com: In what ways will this experience in Portugal be different from MLS?

Adu: This is much different. I mean, everybody is extremely technically gifted. It's one of the best leagues in Europe in football. Benfica in my opinion is one of the top 10 biggest clubs in the world. But I'm ready for it. I've prepared myself for it. My confidence level is as high as it's ever been right now. I'm not getting carried away. I just want to go in with the right attitude and from Day 1 make a difference. After my first practice with the team, the coach [Fernando Santos] asked me: What do you like to play best? Those are the sweetest words I've ever heard. That just means the coach wants to put you in a situation where you can help the team. That's a great feeling.

SI.com: Tell me a little bit about your trip to Portugal. What did you do there?

Adu: When I got there I was swarmed by about 100 cameras at the airport. I had no clue that was going to happen. There were a lot of fans there. I was welcomed with open arms, and that made me feel great. I went to the stadium and got all the paperwork done and I finalized the deal. I actually walked down to the pitch at night and they had all the lights on and it was unbelievable: a 65,000-seat stadium, amazing grass. I met all the players. Half of them speak English, so it makes it easier, and they were great guys. So I'm really looking forward to going there and getting my European career started.

SI.com: I saw the video of your arrival there. Were you surprised by all the attention?

Adu: I was very surprised. I didn't know they knew I was coming. It's funny. We don't think in those terms, because when you play in MLS, soccer isn't the No. 1 sport in America. Over there it's the life. Everything is soccer. So when I got there and got off the plane, I was really surprised. It was something that happens to guys like David Beckham, not me. But they're happy to have me and I'm happy to be there, and I know how to deal with it now. When I came to MLS I didn't know how to deal with all the media attention. I have enough experience that I know how to deal with it now. I'm going to go in and play, because the most important thing is playing on the field and being able to contribute. I really am ready.

SI.com: What kind of formation does Benfica play, and where on the field do they see you fitting into that?

Adu: I talked to the coach and he said, "Sometimes I play a 4-3-3 and sometimes a 4-4-2, but more of a 4-2-2-2." He said he might see me sometimes as a right forward or sometimes as a second forward or an attacking midfielder. I should be prepared for anything. But that being said, I'm ready to go out on the field and make a difference.

SI.com: How much playing time do you think you'll get this season?

Adu: I don't know. That's up to the coach and, in the end, to me and how I play. I want to work hard and show them I'm ready to contribute right away. I don't want to be one of those guys where I go there and wait a long time before I become a starter. Our first game is coming up on Aug. 14 as a Champions League qualifier, so I've got to try to fit in right away, and I think I can do that.

SI.com: I heard you talked with Abel Xavier, the L.A. Galaxy's Portuguese defender, before going over there.

Adu: I did. He's played at Benfica, played in a lot of different leagues around the world. He told me for my style of play, for a player of my talent, Benfica was the best place for me to go. Because they allow you to play and to be yourself. They develop you. They're not going to spend all this money on you and put you on the bench. They're going to play you. He told me it was a great place. I've only been there for a couple days, but Portugal is great. It does help when you play for Benfica. They worship Benfica over there, and I'm really excited to be there. Xavier helped a lot.

SI.com: The biggest name on the team there is Rui Costa. Did you have any exchanges with him?

Adu: Yeah. I met him, shook his hand. And he said welcome and good luck. He said he'd heard about me, seen me play, and he said I was a good player. That means a lot. He's the most famous player on the team and he's been on the national team. When he's supportive of you it's a great feeling.

SI.com: How much can you learn from a guy like Rui Costa?

Adu: You can learn a lot from a guy like that. He's played for some of the best teams in the world and in some of the biggest competitions in the world. I'm just going to work hard and keep my mouth shut. If you work hard everything works out.

SI.com: Are you going to take learning Portuguese seriously?

Adu: Yeah. When you live there you're able to pick it up faster. I'm going to take it seriously, and I'm going to learn it.

SI.com: You had a really good Under-20 World Cup with a hat trick against Poland and you basically out-Brazil-ed Brazil. What's the best way to explain why that happened in Canada but it didn't necessarily happen on a regular basis in MLS?

Adu: OK, first things first. I have played around 100 games in MLS. I played in the middle of the field in maybe 15 of those games, OK? I was brought up playing in the middle of the field, playing attacking midfield or second forward. Somewhere along the way I became an outside midfielder because people thought I was too small and couldn't handle the physicality or whatnot. It's difficult to switch positions when you go pro.

I'm not a natural outside midfielder. I'm just not. I never was. I'm an attacking midfielder or a second forward, and I like to get more touches on the ball. That's when I'm more dangerous and where I'm most creative. When you're on the outside you don't get the ball as much. I tried my best to play outside midfield, but at the end of the day I'm not an outside midfielder. I'm an attacking midfielder or a second forward. And when I do get a chance to play that position, that's when I've played my best games. I did get a chance from Thomas Rongen to play that position [at the Under-20 World Cup] and I took advantage of that.

SI.com: You played for three-and-a-half years in MLS. How are you going to look back on those years?

Adu: I learned a lot in MLS. I want to take this time to thank guys like [deputy commissioner] Ivan Gazidis and [executive vice-president] Todd Durbin and the commissioner for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play in MLS. Obviously it was a unique situation. Not a lot of people would gamble and take a chance on a 14-year-old. They gave me an opportunity to start my professional career and I want to thank these guys. Because you never know where I'd be now if I didn't have this chance.

I also want to thank everybody from the teams I played for at D.C. United and Real Salt Lake for their help and support. Because it was difficult. I had some rough patches but I kept working hard, and it shows me a lot about myself that I can come back from anything. An example of that was going to the Under-20 World Cup, really with my back against the wall. Because if I didn't play well at the Under-20 World Cup, who knows what would have happened? That tells me a lot about myself, and I'm thankful for the support I've had, especially from my family. I'm really blessed to have such good people around me.

SI.com: Several guys from your U-20 U.S. team are already playing outside of MLS: you, Michael Bradley, Gabriel Ferrari, Sal Zizzo, possibly Danny Szetela. Are guys your age, in your situations, perhaps better off developing outside MLS?

Adu: Everyone's different. I don't want to speak for anyone, but I think for me it's tough coming into a league like MLS because it's a physical league. Guys are just big, and I wasn't blessed with being the biggest guy on the field. I was blessed with quick feet and skill. And it was tough adjusting to MLS because it's a physical league. Guys like Danny and Ferrari are big, strong kids, and they can adjust anywhere they go. From speaking to these guys, Europe is where they want to be because that's where the sport is biggest. That's where people respect and treat the sport as everything. That's where you want to be to get better and be around the constant passion and everything that comes with it.

SI.com: MLS had never signed any 14-year-olds before. Do you think it also learned some lessons about promoting young players?

Adu: I don't know. It was a unique situation where I felt I was ready to go pro. I wanted to challenge myself and do that. I'd like to think it worked out great for MLS and myself, because I learned a lot and they learned a lot. They were able to bring some casual fans in and help the league get recognized a little bit more. Obviously Beckham's doing that now and doing it bigger than anyone's ever done it, but I'd like to think I contributed a little bit to that at least when I came into the league.

SI.com: With your departure from MLS, Jozy Altidore of the New York Red Bulls becomes the best under-20 prospect in the league. Do you have any advice for him on how to handle the pressure that comes with that?

Adu: Jozy knows. He's got a great head on his shoulders. He just wants to play soccer and do well. He doesn't worry about anything that goes on off the field. People are going to talk, and they're the same people who will bring you down when things aren't going right, so he understands that. All I can say right now is I hope he has the right people around him, because there will be times when things don't go right. Because we're all human. I had the right people around me to help me out, and that's why I'm in the situation I'm in right now. So I really hope that Jozy is able to go through that with the help of the right people around him.

SI.com: What's your living situation going to be like in Lisbon?

Adu: I want to get a house in Lisbon. I want to live in the city, and the team's going to help me get a place. They'll help me get a car, and everything should be set really. When you play for Benfica, all you've got to do is just worry about playing on the field. They take care of everything else off the field. I'm just thinking, wow, this is European soccer. Everything about it is awesome.

SI.com: Are you going to be flying solo over there? Will your family be around?

Adu: My mom wants to come out and visit a lot more than when I was in Salt Lake. But I've been preparing myself for this for the last six months, so when I moved out to Salt Lake I lived by myself to prepare for doing that. I think I'm pretty ready to go over there and live by myself. The sooner I get adjusted to that the better it is for me, because you don't want it to take awhile to adjust. I'm ready to go over there and fly solo. I have my teammates to help me, and I've got guys like [Benfica defender] Manuel Fernandes, who played in England all last season on loan, so he speaks perfect English.

SI.com: Would you rather focus entirely on settling in with Benfica right now, or would you like to be in the mix for upcoming U.S. national-team games?

Adu: I would like to get a good feeling with my new club Benfica, but I also have always dreamed of playing for the U.S. national team. There are always FIFA dates when teams are required to release their players for national duty, so you never know. Right now I'm just happy to be with Benfica, and I want to focus on that. But I'll welcome any national-team call-ups, since I haven't had too many of those [laughs].

SI.com: What comes next?

Adu: I'm going to spend some time with my family and do a lot of interviews the next couple days. And then I'll go over. I'm going over with Arnold Tarzy [a family adviser]. He'll help me with the housing situation. He'll be there about a week. We'd like to get everything done as soon as possible. When he comes back my mom's coming out, so at least for the first couple weeks I'll have people over there with me.

SI.com: Anything else that would be good to know?

Adu: Just know that this is the happiest I've been in a long time. I really want to recognize that it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I'm blown away by the reception I'm getting with the team. They really respect my style of soccer and want me there. I'm looking forward to this chapter of my life. MLS has been great. It felt like it was the right time to move on, and I couldn't be happier.

RREGGA

Adu: O Arsenal, o Manchester United...

Adu: Eu jogo melhor quando me estou a divertir.
