Sven-Goran Eriksson delivers final goodbye and admits how he wants people to remember him
Sven-Goran Eriksson revealed his diagnosis of terminal cancer back in January - and the former England manager has opened up on his "good life" while also discussing his high-profile affairs

Sven-Goran Eriksson has shared an emotional farewell message with the world as he nears the end of his battle with terminal illness.

In January, Eriksson revealed his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, stating that he had, at most, "a year to live." Since then, the former England boss has embarked on a heartfelt farewell journey, visiting various football stadiums across Europe, including those of his former clubs, Lazio, Benfica, and Sampdoria. He also fulfilled his dream of managing Liverpool, taking charge of the Reds for a legends game against Ajax in March.

In a poignant Amazon Prime documentary about his life, titled 'Sven', Eriksson bids an emotional goodbye to fans. "I had a good life, yes," an emotional Eriksson said.

"I think we all are scared of the day when it's finished, when we die. But the life is about death as well. You have to learn to accept it, of what it is."
Continuing, he added: "Hopefully at the end, people will say, 'Yeah, he was a good man'. But everyone will not say that.

"I hope you will remember me as a positive guy trying to do everything he could do. Don't be sorry. Smile. Thank you for everything - coaches, players, the crowd. It's been fantastic. Take care of yourself, and take care of your life, and live it. Bye."

Eriksson made history in 2001 as England's first-ever foreign manager, a role he held for five years. During his tenure, he guided the team through three major tournaments - but he was unable to lead them to glory.

Despite overseeing a squad often referred to as the 'Golden Generation' - featuring stars like Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, and Ashley Cole - England were eliminated at the quarter-final stage in each competition.

Eriksson's personal life often made headlines during his time as England manager, with his affairs becoming the subject of much public attention.

His high-profile relationship with glamorous socialite lawyer Nancy Dell'Olio was frequently in the spotlight, along with his flings with TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson and FA secretary Faria Alam.

Reflecting on his romantic entanglements, Eriksson admitted he was "stupid" but maintained that he never crossed any legal lines. "Sex is one of the good things in life for all of us. She was not married. I was not married," he explained.

"Probably I was stupid, but I think I didn't do anything criminal. I didn't really disturb anyone." He later added: "I had a good life, maybe too good. You have to pay for it."

Dell'Olio had toyed with leaving Eriksson but had a change of heart after relishing in her unofficial role as "the first lady of English football, with the former Manchester City manager adding: "She loved it. The tension. She was a lady from the upper classes in Rome. She liked to go out with important people."

Dell'Olio also featured on the show to give her side of the story as she explained why she made a U-turn on leaving Sven, revealing how much she loved being with him.

"The first impression that I had about Sven, people in power always have extra, extra sex appeal. I felt in love," she said. "It wasn't something that I was looking for. I was married and I left my husband to start my journey with Sven. We were Sven and Nancy since the first date. I was the first lady of English football and there was never going to be another one after me.

"The stupidity of Sven. After Sven's first scandal, I wanted to leave him. I couldn't want to admit to myself that there was a possibility that I made a mistake. That I left everything for him. My lawyers said give him another chance but think what you can get from this."

In addition to his time with the England national team, Eriksson also had managerial stints at Manchester City and Leicester City, and briefly served as director of football at Notts County.

His coaching career spanned across Europe, with significant spells at clubs like Benfica, Lazio, Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, and IFK Goteborg in his native Sweden.

On the international stage, Eriksson managed three other national teams: Mexico, Ivory Coast, and the Philippines, with the latter marking his final role in football before retiring in 2019.

A statement says: "After a long illness, Sven died during the morning at home surrounded by family... The family asks for respect for their wish to mourn in private and not be contacted."

Que descanse em paz.
